Bill Harris, the President of OmegaQuant, and Clemens von Schacky, a cardiologist from Germany, came up with the idea of the Omega-3 Index based on research connecting higher omega-3 levels with lower risk of cardiovascular disease. In 2004 Harris and Von Schacky proposed that the Omega-3 Index met the criteria to be a new risk factor for cardiovascular disease in a paper that has since been cited in over 700 research papers. Over 200 published papers have used the Omega-3 Index methodology, furthering our knowledge of the role of omega-3s in heart health.
In 2009 Dr. Harris founded OmegaQuant Analytics, LLC, an independent, CLIA-certified lab that offers Omega-3 Index testing to researchers, clinicians and the public and sets the standard for fatty acid testing. OmegaQuant was the 2010 winner of the Giant Vision Award which recognizes the best new business in South Dakota. OmegaQuant performs fatty acid analysis in Sioux Falls, SD for commercial and academic researcher collaborators, and for consumers interested in monitoring their nutritional status in both blood and breast milk.
